Re: More Audiophile Musings
Got a bit more practical and picked up some new Asics Gel Kayanos instead -- at $140 (minus a 25% off coupon.) I usually get a cheaper version, but the bicycle is officially mothballed for the winter and I will be running at the gym on cardio days from now on, so I decided to do the right thing.

More to the point, my shins and feet will thank me. My heart gets the workout no matter how much or little that I spend on shoes. My feet, on the other hand . . . (so to speak.)

And I was about to suggest you run barefoot.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
I have watched plenty of barefoot marathoners. There is a trend now with a front of the foot-first step that reduces impact to the heel, and they wear shoes with very little support, or even five-finger shoes:

Re: More Audiophile Musings
As a sprinter, I naturally run on my forefoot. However, I couldn't imagine doing so long distance. The shin splints would kill me without proper conditioning.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
Doing that with distance running is not something that you just casually start -- it takes real training. It must be torture on the calves.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
Speaking of that, I decided to superset opposing muscle groups, which I have not done in a while. Usually I superset legs and abs, but sticking with the opposing muscle group theme I tried to figure out a way to superset the fronts and the backs of the legs. That is a bit tricky, since most compound leg moves work both sides (like squats hitting your hips and glutes as well as the quads.) But I thought about it for a while and came up with this:
Barbelll Squat/Leg Curl (3/6)
Leg Press/Romanian Deadlift (3/10)
Leg Extension/Stability Ball Curl (3/14)
Toe Press/Calf Raise (2/20)
That seemed to minimize overlap. The Leg Curls work with the squats since they really isolate the hamstrings, and the Leg Presses work with the Romanian Deadlifts since they really isolate the quadriceps. Only the calves are worked together, but that is O.K. since the calves are a tough muscle group to work anyway. Even allowing a few seconds between sets to catch my breath, the whole workout took a bit over 30 minutes, and even using the extra spare time to stretch thoroughly, holy cow has it hurt in the days since!

Lactic acid is a bitch. Shock your muscles in a new way and Mr. Lactic seems to find his way in.
Have you watched Dorian Yates' Blood and Sweat series? While I don't think you'd be interested in adopting his workout approach year-round, it makes for an interesting mix up, even if only for a couple of weeks. Boy, does working out like that hurt, if you are willing to push yourself to the limit.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
Speaking of taking a look, I am mildly interested:
http://www.olasonic.us/
No subwoofer and no specified output below 60hz (and that seems like a generous spec) but they are $129 and soley powered via USB. They appear to use some sort of capacitors to store power from the USB port until needed for dynamic peaks. Designed for near-field listening, too. The only review that I could find was from The Audio Critic (so use whatever grains of salt you want, though he does mention that they are the best PC speaker that he has heard since the Monsoons, which were indeed good speakers.)

Spoke too soon. 6moons had a review too:

(Note that I am not even counting sites like Cnet as reviews.)

Re: More Audiophile Musings
Interesting. If you think they'll meet your needs, go for it. And they are actually less than $129 if you act quickly. Amazon is selling them for $99.99: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/ASIN/B0052L6Q78

Re: More Audiophile Musings
I am not going to act that quickly, needless to say. I just discovered them. They would certainly be an improvement over my laptop speakers, and I still have the headphones if I really want to crank things. But they could serve my purposes relatively inexpensively.

Or you could X hifi it up. After all, you've been known to splurge on speaker in the past.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
That may be a bit of a harder sell after breaking in to the five-digit range with the aforementioned Vandersteens.

I just entered a contest to win a Benchmark DAC1, but I am not sure if it is valid in Canada and it requires "liking" their Facebook page, so I guess I will not bother giving the link to you!

Well, I have failed with the A/V drawings so far, so we shall see if the trend holds.

Re: More Audiophile Musings
The vinyl collection is going well. I just went through them again and realized that when my friend moved in with the records he gave me is a mint copy of aqualing.
zeppelin 4 is by far the best thing he gave me. Its in fairly nice shape with minimal wear. It got signed along the way though. At least its not on the outer cover and the overall condition of the rest of the album kind of makes up for it.

Being signed is a bad thing? Or am I thinking of the wrong thing?

Re: More Audiophile Musings
That'd be an oops.
Reminds of a moment from Pawn Stars. I couldn't find a shorter clip, but if you can wait until 6:18, you will see what I'm talking about:

He signed it himself? I might be egotistical, but that puts me to shame.
