She said she doesn't know of any low-cost options off the top of her head, but is going to research for you.

I had to laugh at her latest comment, after I explained a bit about why you want a scanner:

Yes, I would love to spend hundreds on a spectacular scanner. Just not going to do it right now!

Her overall comments were that she has had good luck with HP, and she suggested sticking with an HP in the $200 to $300 range (keep in mind she is thinking Canadian dollars, and things tend to be priced higher up here). If that is still too rich, I have asked her to check with her contacts at the Alberta College of Art and Design, who have a fairly elaborate photography lab and know a thing or two about photography. They might know of some cheap options.

This seems like a relevant time to bring up my HP scanner experience again. The glass developed an uncleanable film on it that would not come off even when the glass was cleaned from the inside.
