Iago's "real" pictures of his September 2011 vacation
Some of you (Seamaster excluded) may have seen the cell phone shots that I uploaded to Facebook, but here are selections from my "real" pictures. All were shot on my vintage Canon A-1, with either my beloved f1.2 50mm lens or a 70-210mm zoom. I use Kodak T-Max 400 B&W film exclusively, even for landscapes. (The grain structure of T-Max is fine enough that I can get very good 8x10" prints.)
All were scanned in at 600dpi and then tweaked in Photoshop. The tweaking was pretty minor and consisted mostly of slight reframing, removing major dust or blemishes from the scans and then adjusting contrast and overall levels. I used no automatic dust removal tools and only hand painted them out with the clone brush. I have learned over the years that it is always best to only worry about the really obvious ones (white specks in dark areas or the reverse) and to let the rest go. I had to send the film out for processing and was very disappointed at how low contrast the prints ended up, but the upside was that they scanned beautifully with plenty of fine shadow detail. I was very impressed at the automatic level controls in Photoshop 9; I would say that nearly 75% of the time I was happy with what it did the first time.
It is worth pointing out for East's benefit that the resulting files were roughly 8mb TIFF files. For uploading them to Photobucket and Facebook, I opened all 60 pictures in Photoshop and then batch processed them into 1200x800 JPEG files. Processing all 60 on my new laptop took approximately thirty seconds!

Was the film out of date, ...and I mean way way out of date?
Re: Iago's "real" pictures of his September 2011 vacation
No. The negatives look fine. I think that it was just a lousy printing job. It all worked out in the end. I can see why when doing a movie transfer, if they are forced to work from a print they use a low-contrast version. You get a more detailed scan.

Interesting. I thought film processing had come to an end in the US. I guess that's what happens when you believe a TV news story.

Nice pics. It would appear that your exorcise regimen has rusulted in the addition of some muscle mass.

It looks like you had a lot of fun on your vacation.
Despite your dissatisfaction with the contrast I think your pictures came out well.

Those are not the raw pictures, but rather the ones that I fixed in Photoshop. The contrast range is fine now.
Ethelred: Actually it has more likely just resulted in the fat being redistributed, but thank you!

I should have figured as much. Still they look good.

So what do you think about having 60 different high resolution TIFF files open simultaneously and batch processing all of them into lower resolution JPEGs in thirty seconds flat? It impressed me!

That not to shabby, pretty impressive.

I think the new lappie is going to make me happy. By the way, when I opened all sixty photos, I just shift-clicked and dragged all sixty into Photoshop at the same time and it opened all sixty in mere seconds as well. And you have not actually commented on the photos themselves, PO -- I am starting to get worried!

Ha ha, no they are fine, just been busy, ...there are some really nice landscapes in your collection. A little to grainy for me, but that is me.

I would say something but I am still in the land of slow internet connection, aka, Dubai. I will have to catch up on all of these photos and videos all of you have put up when I get home on the 5th.

Good to see that your gophers look very much like our gophers!
Glad to hear you had a good time. I would have commented earlier, but I've been facing a few dramas at home.
