Not sure how I feel about the return of Q. Although I am quite fond of the character, I was okay without him in the reboot.

What did you think of Jurassic Park on Blu?

Well, I have one major problem with them: the lossless audio is not working with my Oppo. Anytime there is a peak of any kind (which is frequent in those movies) there is some horrible digital clipping. The first time that it happened I thought that the cones on my Vandersteens had come loose -- not a pleasant thought! I asked Bill Hunt at the Bits if he had heard about any audio problems and he had not (though he did mention that he has heard about some audio issues with the new Star Wars set.) I have not found anything on Google either. I finally had to solve it by using the digital outputs and letting my Krell decode the lossy core DTS track instead. At least it is better than basic Dolby Digital.

Anyway, the transfers are quite good -- I suspect that Steven Spielberg put the hammer to Universal to keep them from over-DNRing them as Universal is prone to do. All of the old supplements are ported over, and they added some new documentaries in HD (though they are disappointingly shallow.)

That may be the first time that I have watched the trilogy back-to-back. The first film still holds up quite well, though in HD it is interesting to see how relatively low-resolution the CGI dinosaurs were back then. (The animation holds up better than the detail.) I have not watched the second one in years, and it is getting tougher and tougher to sit through it. The third one, on the other hand, remains my personal favorite of the series -- even after re-watching the first one. Sure, it has its flaws (as the first one does as well) but it does the right thing after two previous films: it jumps straight to the action. No reason to waste time setting things up, and even counting the opening teaser as set up the film barely takes 15 of its 90 minutes to get on the island -- and again not counting the teaser it is barely 20 minutes until the first casualty happens in spectacular fashion. After that it is nearly non-stop dinosaur mayhem with minimal Spielberg-style schmaltz.

Good to know. Thanks for the summary. I've held off picking up these discs because I grew disinterested with the series and didn't feel the need to replace my DVDs. Still, I do enjoy HD . . . .

III looks the best, of course, but they did a nice job with the transfers on the other two as well. There were some Black Friday sales on the set that got it down to the $30 mark -- have you checked if any Cyber Monday sales are still going?

Regarding the previous, I am not happy about the Q news. The only way that I could see Q fitting into the new Bond universe would be a variant of the Q character from Never Say Never Again, though a with a bit less humor. Someone who is more working-class and less aristocratic. On the other hand, the one thing that has been utterly lacking in the relationship between Bond and Leiter in the new films is that male-bonding style humor. Maybe they could get it from Q. But if they go with a similar approach to the old films, it will fall flat.

My biggest problem is what that means regarding gadgets. All of my favorite Bond films have been the most gadget-free.

I agree regarding the gadgets. It's possible that we could get sophisticated and more realistic gadgets with the reboot. We will have to wait and see. The fact that we will see a younger Q suggests less aristocracy and more working-class, but, again, we will have to wait and see.

While I am happy with a gadget-free, Q-free, Moneypenny-free Bond series, I am sure that they are itching to add those elements back in.

Which is a shame because, as was demonstrated in Casino Royale, the franchise is just fine without those elements.

A rather interesting perspective on the script for Quantum:

Interesting. Were you aware that Craig had contributed to the Quantum script?

Nope. But judging from his comments, he did not consider it much of a contribution! I like the humility in that and him making the point that he wanted to make sure the script for Skyfall was up to par.

I have been busy with other things, but I do plan to get my rewatch of Casino Royale done this weekend. I may have to give Quantum another go after that.

Knowing a bit about the back story behind the script will allow us to watch the show with somewhat fresh eyes. I can almost forgive some of the flaws now, though the directing and choppy action scenes had nothing to do with poor script writing!

I did do Casino Royale this weekend and it still holds up well -- I doubt anything will knock it out of my top four. I did notice (or it finally registered) that Stuart Baird was the editor. Baird has a lengthy career with editing, and often handles action movies -- he has edited a lot for Martin Campbell and Richard Donner, among others. (He also directed the underrated Executive Decision. The action scenes are edited in a more classical fashion, and they do not hurt for lacking insane quick-cutting. They have just as much energy -- more so, in fact -- than the action scenes in Quantum. I also paid close attention during those scenes, and I noticed another detail that is attributable to the skill of the editing and Daniel Craig's physical believability: there are a lot more shots that use a stuntman for Craig than you might expect. Since Craig is so believable as an action star, you never really think twice that some of the quick cuts may not actually be him. Unlike, say, Roger Moore, whose stuntmen could be spotted on a two-inch television screen.

Roger Moore even used a stuntman for the love scenes.

Good point.

I also decided (after having previously been on the fence) that it has one of my favorite title sequences. The bright colours and animated playing card suits were definitely a bit off-putting at first, but it has really grown on me. It was gutsy to do the first title sequence in any Bond film that features not one single female form. It was also clever to "make a statement" with the last shot where Craig walks right up to the camera and looks into it. They desaturated his skin tone to near black-and-white while leaving his eyes a piercing (no pun intended) blue. It is almost a slap in the face to those who complained about a blond-haired blue-eyed Bond.

Yes, that shot of Craig definitely set the tone for an all-business, no-nonsense Bond, unhampered by unnecessary emotion.

After all this Bond talk, I may have to hit up my catalogue of Bond titles again.
