Yes, Acer has come along way. Where did you see those failure rates for laptops at?

No pics or review as the computer isn't mine. I haven't had any hands-on experience.

The reliability ratings I got was from doing some research. Online results were sketchy post 2009, so I did some asking around. I checked with a bunch of repair techs around town and some IT guys I know to see what their findings were. Seems that since the recession, reliability has pretty much evened out, with Acer actually improving (in 2009, they were around 23% or 24% failure rate; HP, incidentally, was up around 26% and it seems they may still be that high). Apple has stayed consistent at 17%, and Toshiba dropped from about 15% to 19%. The theory is that manufacturers looked to cut costs as the market became tougher and consumers looked to spend less and less, which lowered reliability overall. Asus appears to still lead the pack.
