Miscellaneous audio thread Empty Miscellaneous audio thread

Post  Iago Wed Feb 15, 2012 3:14 pm

I just read this review from The Absolute Sound, and I am still thinking about it. As you know I am somewhat in the middle of the road regarding the classic subjectivism/objectivism debate in high fidelity -- while I do believe that much of the claims that are made regarding performance cannot hold up to truly unbiased testing, I also believe that some things that are not conventionally measurable may nonetheless result in audible differences. At the extremes, I think that both the likes of The Audio Critic and Stereophile go too far in their dogmatism. The Absolute Sound is likewise often quite guilty of ascribing differences to equipment that are way over-the-top.

This review was interesting, however. I do believe that time and phase are audible parameters in audio reproduction (hence I do own Vandersteens.) I know that in particular I am quite sensitive to phase -- if I am walking in a store and walk between two speakers that are wired out of electrical phase, it feels like my head is going to explode. So this device sounds particularly interesting. I like the fact that Harley -- quite guilty of silly subjectivist ranting in the past -- is openly skeptical about what he is hearing, and makes the point repeatedly that what he is hearing may be no more than euphonic distortion. Let me know what you think:

I only skimmed the article. After a fairly long day at the office and a stack of work ahead of me tonight, I will need to give this article a more careful read before I comment.

I really do want to see what you think. Harley's candor in questioning his own reactions was refreshing.

You know, I'm not sure what to make of the article. On the one hand, I agree that the skepticism is encouraging. On the other, the cynic in me thinks it is just a clever way to validate his findings. At the end of the day, what we are seeing is one cliche replaced with another.

I am curious about the QOL. However, at $4000, I won't be testing it anytime soon.

No, I will not be testing it either. But what it does certainly sounds interesting. I would love to experiment with it, but that is the problem with our hobby: you need to experiment with things to judge for yourself, but you would want to experiment before shelling out the money for the ability to experiment!

That is where it is good to have a dealer who is willing to allow in-home demos. But I only like to do that when I am serious about wanting to buy something. Otherwise, it's just rude.

Well, if I really liked what I heard with something like this, I would likely drop the money. But up-front, I would still just be "window shopping" (at home, in this case.)
