Well, thanks for stopping by!

Looks like we may have a 2012 Ford Focus in our future. Eve's latest love. (Not a new one, but one with under 20,000 miles.)

I recently had a 2012 Focus (4dr) as a rental car. I thought the engine was a little buzzy (or harsher) than I would have expected (for a regular sedan, not the ST below), ...and the A-pillar on the driver side seemed obtrusive (think, creating a blind spot looking forward...).

We are not in the market, but I would not have minded:

...now not so much.

Focus is one of the reasons Honda Civic 2012 was such a disaster worse selling civic, I believe. For 2013 Civic is being redone after only 1 year.... affraid

Well, we are not planning to buy new, so we are going to settle for the non-ST version. Eve drove one and liked it, so we should be good to go.

That's what's important, ...I was thinking part of the issue was my size (6'4") making visibility awkward.

As an aside, an ST would be an absolute blast. And comes only in one type of transmission: a stick shift, which is the only transmission worth owning (from an enthusiasts standpoint).

Ironically, I'd wait for the dual clutch automatic, ...that they said might come.

As I understand it, that is the only transmission that Ford offers other than the stick; a dual-clutch automated manual. And that is the thing that has gotten the shakiest reviews -- apparently it shifts a little odd:

Worth pointing out that the ST is only the hatchback version, and Eve does not like how it looks, so that version would never be in our future no matter what! Also worth pointing out that this will primarily be Eve's car, so as long as she is happy I am happy. (If we were buying for me, we would not get something that small, regardless of performance.)

I love small, I wish I fit better in the Focus, ...or a 3 series BMW wagon would be nice too.

I kind of knew their dual clutch was a mess, ...I was hoping for something better coming in the future due to the ST.

I got rid of my daily driver a month or so back. Too many transmission problems even after the rebuild and no trouble codes made it impossible to diagnose. I replaced it with a chevy cruze 1LT RS and I am very happy with it. I just wish the brakes didn't feel spongy. I know there is nothing wrong with it because its the exact same way they felt on a cobalt I drove a couple of years back.

Nimble and powerful is a small package is a lot of fun, but I'm a smaller guy and can get away with smaller cars.

As for dual clutch, while I respect the performance, I still prefer an old-school stick shift. I feel more connected to the driving experience when driving a stick shift.

And as for BMW, the M3 would be wonderful. Tail flicks out easily, though and the car likes to slide. Have you driven one?

Nope. Not interested in spending that kind of money! And the reality is that if it was just me, we would not be spending the money on the car, either, but upgrading something in my home theatre instead. (Still need to replace the subwoofer, and the TV needs upgrading eventually.) I love driving fun cars, but from a prioritization standpoint I would rather spend the money elsewhere.

Well, in a sense so do I, because I would certainly love having a newer, sportier car to drive. But when I prioritize, it falls behind the home theatre. I spend most of my driving time in a company car anyway, so from standpoint of sheer utility I will get more out of money spent on home theatre or computers than I will off a newer car.

Computers used to be high on my list, but have slipped down in recent years. I simply don't have the time to get into gaming as much as I'd like, so that takes the edge off of wanting the newest and greatest.

Gaming still keeps me sane. To me, it is a vastly superior escape valve than drugs or alcohol!

Yep, but I'm decidedly more old school. I love a good, old-fashioned novel. Fantastic escape. Gaming is a blast, but I do find many games addictive.

Games, books, movies, music -- all birds of a feather for me. But in the case of games, I generally only play RPGs at this point, so they do have that extra special escape factor that even a book does not have.

We ended up getting a brand new 2012 Focus SEL. It has all of the available options for the SEL trim save for the backup camera/parking assist, a sunroof, and heated seats. But otherwise it does have leather, the upgraded 17"wheels and handling package, and the MyTouch system with navigation. (Which, believe it or not, Eve has actually figure out how to get it to do some things via voice commands like tuning the radio.) They gave us $9800 for the Chrylser, and I was very happy with that. (It was a base model 2006 with 75,000 miles and some mechanical problems that we were trying to put off fixing.)

We were going to go with a used 2012 in the 20,000 mile range, but all that they had available was actually a worse deal. We would have paid a couple thousand less, but without the MyTouch system, which is normally a $2000 add on anyway. Frankly, the extra $2000 would have been worth it just for losing the 20,000 miles of wear and tear. The old canard about depreciating $4000 just by driving a car off the lot does not seem to hold any more. This is the first time that I have ever bought a new car.

All told, we will spend about $12,000 out-of-pocket. We spent more than that on each of our last two slightly used vehicles!

Definitely: 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper vs. 1 year/10,000. You add it all up and even with the extra $2000, we came out way ahead.
