One more word about George Lucas and Star Wars Empty One more word about George Lucas and Star Wars

It took me a bit, but I finally got around to watching The People vs. George Lucas last weekend (with Eve, who really liked it.) While it can hardly be called balanced, it is nevertheless a fast-paced and entertaining look at the Star Wars movies and their alterations, and the love-hate relationship that fans have with not just the films but Lucas himself. It includes a ton of clips from fan films that are worth the price of admission alone; my favorite is a parody of Misery where a fan kidnaps Lucas and demands that he rewrite the films. (Also a puppet clip that connects Star Wars to Michael Jackson in an amusing way.) The documentary does include clips of people defending Lucas and the prequels (though they must have had a harder time tracking down anyone to defend the alterations of the original trilogy) but its heart is clearly with the fans who feel jilted and abused. Highly recommended.

I've never been in the right mindset when I've thought about watching that documentary. Like any heated debate, I find the sides are too far skewed at times, and that becomes tiresome. I might check it out for the parodies, though.

Well, that is what is enjoyable about this one; by definition it is a movie about fanboys, so the fanboy attitudes are half the fun. And their snarkiness is often quite amusing -- their comments on the "Greedo shoots first" controversy are sometimes hilarious.

The best thing about the movies is how entertaining that it is, which is not something that can be said about a lot of documentaries, even the good ones!

A solid tongue-in-cheek documentary is always welcome.

The movie DOES really take a hard look at the dispute, but it does it with wit. Check it out.

No, wit he lacks. And that is pointed out in the movie, by the way -- they really tear into "humorous" things like Jar-Jar Binks. Check the thing out!

Jar-Jar Binks. What a sad character. As if The Phantom Menace wasn't a bad enough movie without Jar-Jar.

There are various fan edits of The Phantom Menace which tighten up the film and remove the parts that they hate, such as Jar-Jar. The best of them runs about 70 minutes. (They talk about this in the documentary.)

"Han Solo shoots first......"

"my childhood was raped.."

and wha wha wha wha, and George Lucas basically says I don't give a fuck it's my story and movie.

after the documentary, George Lucas sells StarWars to Disney and another documentary will be made he was a sell out....

Another announcement of new films that I cannot generate any enthusiasm for . . . Once all of the rumours have settled down and we see some real writers and directors attached to the projects, I may or may not get interested, depending on the choices. Granted, the fact that Lucas himself will not be touching them is good news . . .

The original trilogy is all that matters . . . at least for our generation. It will be a new generation that loves all of the spinoffs and new movies.

The speculation has already started about whether or not Disney would release the original trilogy now that they own the shebang. They would make a lot of money off of it, and Disney is always about the money. On the other hand, I am sure that Lucas put some kind of clause into the sale specifying that only his special editions could be released.
