I do not think that riding a trainer would specifically help your upstroke. If anything, trainers have a negative impact on your riding because the "feel" is so different from being on the road. With anything short of rollers, you lose the involvement of the rest of your muscles that are used to keep a bike upright on the road. Even true rollers do not give a really accurate feel. The resisitance on the rollers does not quite simulate the feel of the road, especially when it comes to hills. I have used trainers, but mostly because I had to during winter. I always felt that I lost conditioning during the winter. Mentally, it is harder to motivate yourself to push when there is no road to "conquer." (And even with the trainer put in front of the TV, it is still deadly, deadly dull.)

That is why last winter I started running more and spending more time cross training for variety. For example at the gym I may rotate ten minutes each on a treadmill, stairstepper and stationary bike. Ten minutes is about the mark when I start to get antsy, so switching stations helps.
