Shall we get it started with a discussion on cables?

They are too busy spending all of the unpaid tax revenues from their offshore holdings!
By the way, Seamaster, their was another review of the Oppo BD-83SE that I was going to link to on the old forums, but for the life of me I cannot find it. I found a newer one at Home Theater Magazine, but their reviews lack real depth.

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
You can say that again.
Maybe we should return to mini Blu-Ray reviews? The studios are now releasing enough new titles regularly that I cannot keep up with what I want (and pay the mortgage at the same time) so it may be interesting to exchange thoughts on what we have picked up lately.
I cannot remember if I mentioned it on the old boards, but run out and pick up Jason and the Argonauts. It is the best Harryhausen title on Blu to date (both in terms of the quality of the film and the quality of the disc.) SeaJunior needs Harryhausen. All kids of all ages do.

I was planning on buying Jason and the Argonauts when I ordered Clash of the Titans, ...I know, I know my kids wanted it. They got their faces painted/ turned to stone by Medusa at Comic-Con.
Luckily we watched Clash of the Titans on Netflix first, now they even agree there is no need to buy it, but I do still need to order Jason and the Argonauts for them.

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
Sony has put a great deal of time and care into their catalogue titles and deserves some kudos for it. The temptation with Harryhausen films would have been to smother them with DNR, especially during the Dynamation shots when the grain is very pronounced. Fortunately Sony has cleaned up any true damage to the films while keeping the film looking like film.
I picked up Clash of the Titans and started watching it last week, and while MGM does not appear to have ruined it with DNR, the transfer is still pretty weak. It is probably the best that we will ever see, though. (I have yet to catch the remake . . . )

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
I will have to check my catalogue to identify what's new. I believe my recent additions are new releases (e.g., Shutter Island and Wolfman). I also picked up Sin City not too long ago.
Also, although embarrassing, I will admit that I'm considering picking up the Final Destination trilogy. I know the acting and writing isn't brilliant, but the concept is interesting (if not original) and the death scenes are so over the top that how can you not have fun?
Did either of you pick up True Blood on Blu? Not a series for the kids or the squeamish or those easily offended, but an HBO must otherwise.
I'd be happy to offer a review on any of them.

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
I would love to pick up True Blood, but that is on my wait-for-the-right-price list (i.e., Amazon "Gold Box"-type sale.) Like I said, there is just too much out there right now to pick up everything. That is a good problem to have, of course. With the Alien and Apocalypse Now sets coming in October, as well as several others in the next few months, there are some pricey must-haves in the pipeline.
I have not even picked up some titles that I really want like some of the Shout! Factory Roger Corman releases. I really want Death Race 2000 and Piranha. The editions are supposed to be excellent with as-good-as-can-be-expected transfers and lots of fun supplements.

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
Waiting on True Blood for the right price too. That was another heavily advertised property at Comic-Con a couple weeks ago. They wrapped the interior of all the elevator cars at our hotel with True Blood character/ graphics. Did you know? Apparently female vampires don't wear shoes, ...or so said all this aforementioned advertising. Foot fetish at the advertising agency maybe?

I am a bachelor this weekend, so depending on the breaks I may run down to the Cities and hit a movie. Invariably a trip to Best Buy will follow, and money will be spent . . .

Bought some HDMI cables from an ebay seller, Rocketfish 4ft. for 7.95 each, I found it was better deal then monoprice. Considering it was name brand (I suppose).

Re: The Refugee Audiophile thread #1
I have stuck with Blue Jeans. Their best HDMI cable is still the only one actually manufactured in the United States. Not that there is anything wrong with the ones that are built in China, of course, but for all of the claims that most Western companies make about their cables, it is significant that they have them manufactured overseas and are not even present for QC during the process.
