Pc Painting?
Well I am back once again from work and will be back on all my projects again. I wound up getting three of the Aopen 915 mini / voodoo idol's and I think I am ready to do some painting. I haven't decided color yet but looking at what type paints some of you may have used in the past. Thanks.

Re: Pc Painting?
Well you have 2 options. You can paint it using automotive paint out of rattle cans from the auto parts store or you can consult a local body shop. They may have some paint left over from a recent job that they would be willing to spray the idol with to make a few extra dollars.
I would go with option 2 but I also know somebody that would probably do me a favor.
Alternatively you could pick up a cheap paint gun and compressor on harbor freight and paint it yourself.
You should be fine with ppg or du point as long as you do the prepwork before painting it. (Scuff it up with a really fine grade sand paper and wipe it down with prepaint or wash it using dish detergent to remove any oils from your skin that will cause the paint to peel)
You should check out k-tron's 709 build from a few years back:

And this guys quake 3 themed emachine:

Re: Pc Painting?
Thanks for those links, I will check them out. I use to do model cars a lot, so I still have most of my airbrush stuff, but I don't know how that paint would hold up over time. It still looks good on my models though and some of them are from the late 80's to early 90's. I wasn't going to go crazy with first one. Still have two more to mess with. And before I leave for work again I may pick up a couple of more from the guy.

Re: Pc Painting?
Just don't try and shoot automotive paint through your model airbrush. The automotive paint is thicker and will clog it up in no time if it even works at all.
Re: Pc Painting?
Don't do what K-TRON did. That thing turned out hideous and gaudy looking.

I am leaning more toward a single color with a clear coat. I am also trying to decide on just a voodoo logo or logo with tattoo. Just something simple.

If you want a blackbird you should check this out.
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Blackbird-002-Quad-Core-4GB-500GB-SLI-VOODOO-DNA-/300587395921
Although I think a more honest diagnosis of the unit is that the squeaking noise is coming from the water pump, It probably failed and may or may not have shorted some things out. In the very best case the pump failed and the graphics cards fried as a result. If no water was spilled the cpu and motherboard probably survived unharmed thanks to thermal throttling.
For what is damaged his price is high but keep an eye on it, After it doesn't sell you might be able to work out a deal with him if your interested.

I have always been more partial to the firebird, but I don't think if it came down to it swapping motherboards would be very easy. In a few more months when I get some more of this other computer stuff I am working on out of the way I am going to get serious about finding a case, or doing up a case how I want.

Speaking of the hp firebird
Although they will never admit it I am taking credit for the hp firebird being named what it is. After I posted photos of my 83 and Tha Bastage shared his fond memories of his 2nd gen hp unveiled the hp firebird. Coincidence? I think not... If I had to guess it was already in development but didn't have a name yet.
Since they already had the blackbird out maybe firebird just stuck in there head and seemed like the next logical name
Of course this is just a theory based on circumstantial evidence, I will never know for sure. It is kind of cool though to think that you may have influenced a decision as big as that.

Re: Pc Painting?
Another cool bit of knowledge. You never know how or why they name things at times. When Shelby was working for ford on the Mustangs they kept bothering him for a name for his line of mustangs. He finally got tired of it and that day when they asked him he asked a friend of him how many paces it was to the next building. It was 349 paces, he turned to the for guys and said we will call it the gt350 and walked on.

I just saw these 2 m7700 shells on ebay custom painted with there own tattoos. You could probably do a tattoo if you put the time into it.

Re: Pc Painting?
That first one looks suspiciously close to a Voodoo tattoo.

Re: Pc Painting?
That is what I was thinking when i saw it. On an alienware it just looks like an abomination.

It just does not fit with the usual Alienware bling.

I agree. I was making fun of the idea of native aliens.

Ah. The altitude on that one was too high for me to catch it prior to going over my head.

Somewhat fitting. I imagine flying saucers fly at high altitudes.

Re: Pc Painting?
Looking at all of the companies that I experimented with prior to settling on Digital Storm, Alienware has hands-down the worst website and the worst configuration screen. No one else even came close to that bad. The old Voodoo website had major issues, but I swear that even that worked much better.

Re: Pc Painting?
The alienware site is horrible. It is bad enough that when you click to customize you get redirected to a white dell page (it kills any excitement you had about buying an alienware) The actual cfg tool is horrible. You have to keep clicking next to see the different options available. What moron thought that would be better then having a single page with all the options displayed? It is absolutely horrible. It is appalling what dell did to them. Almost as appalling as HP using Dr. Dre to scare customers away form the Envy product line.
On a more on topic note I have been isolating some tattoos for ADOR. I will post them up when I am done should he wish to use one in his pc painting project. That is unless Roz can give us the original tattoo vectors.

Re: Pc Painting?
I never cared much for Alienware anyway, but it is sad to see a company diluted.

Re: Pc Painting?
While they doubtless would have been more expensive than the other companies that I looked at, I still would have like to configure a similar system to see what it cost. I did not have the patience to get throught the configurator and gave up halfway through. I did try Falcon, and the same specs with a one-year warrenty came out at $5800. Painted, mind you, but that needs to be a helluva paint job for over $1600.
By the way, it is worth noting that I never even considered a 3D configuration. Not interested.

With Falcon, you are no doubt paying for the Falcon name and badge.
