I hate these donation-based campaigns. The makers of Wasteland are doing the same thing. From a business perspective, it makes sense: Have the fans fund or partially fund development. But if game development falls through, fans are out of luck. And I'm guessing the pledge or donation guise protects the developers from have to refund any of that money. Certainly an interesting way to generate capital.

gulp ... didn't know that....ayeeeee.

It is an interesting mode of development, and essentially allows fans to invest, but like any investment the money goes to waste if the project fails.
