I am really not familiar with current plasma models. I could do some research, but not with that kind of short notice!

Re: Purchasing a Plasma tonight undecided what which to purchase
thanks. I'm really liking the Panasonic. In reality I might take a look at them tonight and buy it friday night.
My brother has two Panasonic plasmas and they always look great when playing his movies. I dont want to buy online since I don't want to go through the hassle of shipping back if I need to return for what ever reason. So those are my choices.

I always had good luck with Panasonic equipment back when I used to sell the stuff, so unless their quality has dropped you should be good to go. I have read good reviews of their plasma models in the past. Samsung was still an "up and comer" in the home electronics world back when I sold things and they certainly have done well. I had a Samsung DLP rear projector that was very faithful. Never been a Toshiba fan, but I cannot give you a good reason for that.

Re: Purchasing a Plasma tonight undecided what which to purchase
Toshiba doesn't make it's own panels, Panasonic does but is cutting back on production (selling facilities?), Samsung seems to be staying the course this year in regards to Plasma TVs.
Last "big TV" I bought (a Sony LCD), I ordered from TigerDirect and I have to say 1) I was impressed with the care the delivery guy showed (at the house, ...god knows what went on till it got there) 2) I still consider myself lucky (regarding this purchase). All in all, I'd do it again, ...for a unit I know I'd like at the right price. Just say'in. Where you shopping for these?

bestbuy I went to the wrong store they had neither on stock or display. Found a store in Downey where they have all three displayed. I'm really leaning towards the Panasonic. To bad Pioneer no longer makes Plasmas, I really think Plasmas are making a comeback after all the bad press.

Re: Purchasing a Plasma tonight undecided what which to purchase
Pioneers Kuro models were some of the best plasma screens available, but at a much higher price than you are talking about.
I bought my last RPTV online from OneCall and was very happy with them. That went freight, of course, since it was too big for normal delivery, so I got it unloaded to the curb and that was it. (Which was actually fine, since I would rather take over from there anyway.) But I was very impressed with how it was packaged for shipping, including motion detectors to show if the package had been excessively jostled.

Re: Purchasing a Plasma tonight undecided what which to purchase
Panasonic purchased the rights and R&D behind the Kuro technology, and apparently incorporates it into their new sets, although I don't how much of that technology is actually in the new sets. That said, Panasonic's new plasmas are very good and have good black levels. I have one, and so I am biased.
That said, there has been a lot of discussion around black levels fading on Panasonics as the sets age. Panasonic claims to have rectified the issue, but you just never know.
Samsung is also doing well and their plasma sets are also well respected, with solid black levels.
For a plasma, I'd stick to the Panasonic or Samsung. Nothing wrong with Toshiba, but they do better with their LCDs.

Re: Purchasing a Plasma tonight undecided what which to purchase
By the way, I was looking at your original post and it is worth noting that the 600hz number on the Samsung model, if that is really how it is listed, is complete bullshit. There is no such thing. The 600 number is accurate in that it is the number of sub-fields that plasmas use to generate a frame, so if the listing actually says something like "600hz sub-frames" it is cool, but if it just says 600hz that is crap. LCD manufacturers have started using some bogus numbers for their refresh rates as well. HDGuru has a decent breakdown:

He also talks about it here:

Well, I would probably trade that ability in for a few more users instead, but it is what it is!
