Amazing that I still have all of the pictures that I used for the old boards on Photobucket. I even have a couple of dozen mobius pictures ready when needed!

Looking through all the pictures on that album does make one a trifle curious what the contexts were when I originally posted them. Some of them I do remember, but others are a mystery. This one was clearly directed at Ryan, but it is from Excel Saga not Sailor Moon, so I wonder why I used it:

Because Ryan hated anything Japanimation. He hated the big eyes, especially on the girls and the way that little girls are often portrayed as being just a little more grown up than they ought to be.

Could be that simple, but I suspect that I may have used that particular one as an iMaxx smite.

The biggest thing that I miss from Japan was the snack shop in the lobby of the hotel!

I would have thought that it'd be the restaurant you liked atop the camera store. Or Liptone Limone. You haven't forgotten about that, have you?

No, because I bought most of it in the snack shop next to the lobby!

You need such a snack shop in Osceola.

I would love a good Asian grocery store around here. Not gonna happen, though. On the other hand, the likes of WalMart and Target have started stocking more interesting snacks like Pocky.

Calgary has a rather large Asian influence, so we're able to get our hands on some fairly authentic stuff (either in China Town or in Asian markets and convenience stores). Less Japanese and more Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Filipino fare, though. Indian, too, appears more in restaurants than market, although I haven't really looked that hard for Indian. I enjoy Indian food, but I like to go to a restaurant when I have the urge for Indian. Same deal for sushi.

There is actually a pretty good vegetarian Indian restaurant in St. Croix Falls, which is six miles north of Osceola. A Vietnamese restaurant in our area would become my home away from home. Fortunately, I can cook any of those cuisines, and quite well, too. But it is indeed nice to have someone else do the work.

Vietnamese is almost a comfort food for me, although I do not find it nearly as refined as Thai or Japanese cuisine. Indian, I find, can go either way. One of my favourite Indian restaurants in town tends toward refined, but the flavour is spot on and they are not afraid of adding heat.

Thai is more flavorful overall than Vietnamese, and so is Maylasian, but "comfort food" is probably as good a descriptor of Vietnamese food as any other. Unlike the rest, I could easily eat Vietnamese food every day and never tire of it.

Affordable, too, which adds to its appeal. I've yet to walk into a pretentious Vietnamese restaurant.

Now I want pho or vermicelli with charbroiled pork, or lemongrass chicken, or sate beef . . . . And a side of fresh spring rolls, please. And maybe some fish balls.

I had to settle for Puerto Rican scallops last night -- grilled with pineapple in a pina colada cream sauce. I did not suffer too badly.

Now I'm hungry!

Wish there was a Malaysian restaurant in Calg... there was one called Tropica but it closed and just exists in Edmonton. The roti bread is my fav!

I'm craving something entirely different. I want a lamb pot roast, with grilled veggies served over blue-cheese risotto.

My favorite Malaysian restaurant in the Twin Cities closed years ago, sadly. The had the best rendang in the universe, and chef Kin Lee's multi-course Chinese New Year meals were some of the most amazing meals that I have eaten in my entire life. There is another Malaysian restaurant in the Twin Cities, however that while not up to those standards is pretty good. The fun part is that they have an open kitchen, and you can watch the chef spinning the roti canai like pizza dough before cooking it fresh to order.

Rozz: You can check out Indonesian Kitchen on 17th -- they do a mix of culinary foods like a Malaysian restaurant would. Malaysian isn't really a style of food, but rather a reflection of the diverse cultures who inhabited the country and brought their food styles to the land.

I opted for a Thai sub for lunch. Given that and the heat outside, fresh sushi would go over well for dinner. Lamb is still playing around in the back of my mind, though.
