Re: Anti Virus
I've used AVG for about seven years. I've felt no need to switch.
I don't like or trust McAfee or Norton anymore. They used to be good, but I now find the software to be bloated and ineffective at times.
Although I've never used the software, I have also heard good things about Avast.

The latter, of course, is particularly useful on TLAP day.
I use AVG. Quite satisfied.

Re: Anti Virus
I have been running trend micro titanium maximum security since I reloaded the x60 the other week, and so far it has blocked a lot of stuff, no complaints here.

Re: Anti Virus
I switched from Norton to Trend Micro about 7 years ago. I got tired of Norton asking me if I really wanted to do something just after I had depressed the key indicating that I did. Unfortunately, Trend Micro is getting that way also. Although it seems to be more intrusive on Dell computers than on HP.

Re: Anti Virus
I don't use anything on my gaming rigs. (Desktop and Clevo d900t) On the browser level I have Firefox with the following plugins; (listed in order of importance) noscript, adblock plus and flashblock. If I receive a file that is suspicious I use virustotal to scan it.
I am satisfied with trend micro. I will be switching the old ins 8200 over to trend micro as well next time I actually use it for something.

I have nothing great things to say for ESET. I have been using it for about 2yrs now and before that it was bitdefender untill there updates kept having capability issues with win7.
My vote ESET pricey, but worth it.

Re: Anti Virus
He showed up for our poker game one time after moving up my direction, but no word since. He still posts on FB periodically.
I have switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and am quite happy with it.

Re: Anti Virus
On some of the older single core computers I have I have swapped to Microsoft security essentials and it doesn't bog the system down, smallest cpu I have had it on was 900mhz Pentium M. Norton seemed to do better when they released there "gaming edition" I liked it then, could turn on and off each individual part if I wanted too are all of it on a whem. Since they didn't continue the "gaming edition" it updated to 2010 with out asking. In a couple more months my subscription is out and I will be uninstalling it. Lately for just web browsing I have been dual booting with ubuntu 10.10, firefox with flashblock, I haven't really used the script killer stuff. I also keep a copy of spybot portable updated on my flash drive just incase.

Re: Anti Virus
Seems odd to trust the creator of Windows with protecting Windows from all the security holes in their own product, but it does indeed have a very small footprint and appears to do the job.

Re: Anti Virus
I had MS __ Essentials on one of my machines at home but was told by our IT that it is a waste of effort. Have since switched to AVG on two of my machines and plan to dump Trend Micro from the balance of my machines as the subscriptions run out. Trend Micro without my consent switched all my licences to auto matically renew with the "Double Platinum Plus Internet Security With Decoder Ring" at a price that was more than I was willing to pay.

Interesting. The IT guys that I know recommend it. Just goes to show that there are no absolute truths in the universe!

Leo Laporte recommends ms essentials over all the other free anti-virus software.

Re: Anti Virus
Well as I started to say in the other thread I just finished reformatting the omen (again). After reading this comparison I decided to give m$ security essentials a try this time around. The biggest down side seems to be that it takes a while longer to scan.
Re: Anti Virus
I think the best security is smart browsing. Don't open dodgy attachments and stay away from those questionable sites, like the kind that mrblur frequents.

Re: Anti Virus
That may be the best, but it is still not bulletproof. A reputable site can get infected, and there may still be lovelies like the blaster worm that killed one of my systems years ago that was just looking for an open port -- I plugged the computer into the internet and never even got to open a website before it started to affect my system a few seconds after plugging it in.

Re: Anti Virus
M$ Essentials detection rates were impressive in the comparison I posted. So far scan times do not seem to be much of a problem (on 4.04tb) My only concern is weather its doing a through job scanning my system.
Re: Anti Virus
The scans seem fast to me, but to be fair I have no other frame of reference with my new system. When I had it installe on my old laptop, I do not recall it really taking any longer than AVG did.
