Re: Anti Virus
Firewall and anti-virus software is a must, but smart browsing also helps. The two go hand in hand.

Re: Anti Virus
So far my main complaint about M$E is that it does not show you the status of scheduled scans until they are finished.
Re: Anti Virus
for being I have no complaints. I have installed on couple of PC's that are not mine, no complaints from anyone thus far.

Ah, but can it stand up to YOUR usage?

Re: Anti Virus
I installed Essentials last night to check it out. We'll see how it does, but I liked how quickly it installed and the interface is nice and simple. Still a fan of AVG though.

Re: Anti Virus
Curious what you think. I was starting to have a problem with AVG interfering with some games.

Re: Anti Virus
Had been using AVG forever, but made the switch to Microsoft Security Essentials. Essentials is now my favorite, it keeps the PC safe, and I don't need to do anything (avg needed updates, restarts, and the final versions I used were sloooow)

Re: Anti Virus
I switched away from avg a couple of versions ago when they had that problem with poorly made installer not installing avg correctly. First I tried avast then trend micro and now M$E.
I have about 3 days on M$E so far and I see nothing wrong with it so far.

Re: Anti Virus
Essentials appears to be running hassle free, and in the background, where it ought to be. I even took a chance and installed it on my dad's computer, as he, coincidentally, was starting to have problems with AVG.

Re: Anti Virus
So far so good with M$ E myself. I am surprised m$ seems to have made a decent product for a change, and its free.

Change is good.

Re: Anti Virus
I am starting to get the impression that M$E is not protecting my computer as well as it could be. I just installed avg free and so far it picked up 2 things that M$E missed and it didn't even finish scanning yet.

sorry to hear that it did not work out for you. Personally I use ESET on all my home computers.

Re: Anti Virus
Unless they conflict I am going to stick with both M$E and AVG. I certainly have enough ram.
Re: Anti Virus
I had both on briefly but AVG did not pick up anything different. I uninstalled AVG (which was starting to piss me off anyway) but as long as it does not cause resource issues there is nothing wrong with extra security.

Well, if you're into risky behaviour, might as well double-bag.

Re: Anti Virus
Its not so much what I am into as my customers. I routinely copy there data to this pc before wiping there hard drives and scan it for viruses before putting it back. There is no point in reformatting their drive if I am just going to reload it with the same viruses it had before.
I hit this with avg yesterday followed by m$e and finally tune up utilities and its running great. I am still getting hardware lag which is the main reason I started looking into viruses to begin with. I am starting to think its being caused by my less then optimal psu. The system never actually crashes so I never suspected it but the more I think about it the more im suspecting that's what it is.
Its also a good excuse to buy that corsair 1200w I want.

Re: Anti Virus
Aha! I knew that there was an ulterior motive. From viruses to new PSUs!

Re: Anti Virus
So far so good with the avg + m$e combo. Might still throw avast into the mix for added piece of mind.
I did think I had a problem earlier as FF kept crashing but it turned out to be a poorly coded FF addon update.
