Photography Appreciation

Well, I like my pictures to look their best. Unfortunately, there is no perfect way to take pictures of pictures.

By the way, the shot of Eve and me kissing was still something that I set up and just had someone snap it for me. That was outdoors on a porch at night at our wedding shower. I never use a flash, so I found a spot under one bare incandescent bulb and had Eve stand in her place while I locked the exposure that I wanted and focused it, then carefully planted one of her friends where I was standing and quickly ran over to Eve for the friend to snap it. Nothing spontaneous about that photo!

I feel much better knowing that the kissing shot was planned. I was worried that you had broken from character.

I worked on a book many years ago that required taking photographs of existing prints and pages from a train station log book. We hired a professional photographer to do that work (and take many other shots too). Though I did not suffer with trying to take those photographs (I only looked on at time, out of a genuine interest), I do appreciate how difficult it is to take a photograph of a photograph.

Well, it is irritating me so I am going to take another try at it when I get home.

The 2nd collage looks very nice the way you have it arranged and overlapped. It is nice that you have a mix of photographs in this one.

I tried taking it off the wall and putting it on the floor, which got more even lighting, but for some reason my cell phone camera kept getting the focus wrong. I would think that is was because of the depth of the frame, but it is the same situation with the Japan frame, and that one focused perfectly. Here is the best shot that I could get:

Even if it isn't perfect, it is still an improvement over the last shot. I do like the collage and I can now see Stanley's face!

EastT: I had a scanner, but some of the items we were working with were museum pieces and fairly large. Not only did we want to limit handling, but some of the pieces wouldn't fit a standard flat-bed scanner, and we were not about to take a chance running them through a rolling scanner (like you might have seen at a large-scale print shop that does offset printing).

seamaster, That makes a lot more sense. The only conclusion I could draw before is that you were working on this project before flatbad scanners were around.

Both frames are in the living room. We found some relatively inexpensive B&W "art prints" at Targe that fit in with them perfectly.

I see what you meant in the first shot regarding Stanley with Eve. I thought that you meant it was a shame that he was not facing the camera. But you meant that his face appeared to be missing. As you can see in the second try, it is more of a profile of him.

Well, I have the brightness on my work monitor dialled down so as to reduce eye strain and headaches. It's possible your earlier shot was fine, but that things were blurring out because of my settings.

Many of the documents I work on are on a white canvas (which will put out a lot of light), so when I callibrate my monitor, I dial the brightness down as low as I can.

Aside from blinding white documents, has work improved?

Almost. My secondment ends at the end of June. Of course, who knows what I will be thrown into next. But at least it will be a change!

If the pressure gets too low, just run for local office. That will add it back.

I will keep that mind. However, for now, I feel that the pressure is high enough.

I am losing my supervisor at work, who has been one of the most supportive and helpful TDMs that I have had, especially as relates to my headaches and the needs of my local office. I will doubtless be back on my own with him gone. That will make things much, much more difficult.

Have you considered applying for his position? Eliminate the problem of a new boss by becoming the new boss!

That seems logical and should include a pay increase to boot.

Actually, I might lose a bit financially if I did that. Regardless, I am not currently pursuing that kind of position. 'Nuff said.

Well, then, I am sure you will figure out a way to manage the new manager.

Figuring out a way and looking forward to the process are not exactly the same thing.

It all depends on the person. We shall see.

Indeed. You need to know what you are getting into before you sink your teeth in (strong, chipped or otherwise!).

Until they do some hiring or rearranging, I simply will not have a supervisor. The tough part is that my Village board service is really taking a lot of time, and Jeff was very supportive and helped cover stops when necessary. Plus, my Dad has some potential major surgery coming up, so my work schedule may be really tough for a while without anyone helping out.

Hmmm. You could suggest setting up self-directed teams, which eliminates the need for a supervisor and spreads the burden of administrative work across the team. Sounds like you will be doing that anyway; why not get recognized for the effort?
