Voodoo Idol Upgrade / Make Over?

If not let me know and I will see what else my son can come up with. Also what version of java are you running? I think minecraft was made to run version 6 not 7. Some problems can come up over that.

I was leaning toward a Phenom x 4 or x 6, but not sure about some of the newer FX x4 and X6 chips. What are your thoughts on the newer chips?

That's an awesome motherboard, I was able to pick up the same reference board from gigabyte for 90 dollars on black friday. The board only supports SLI or 2 cards for cross-fire. Personally I would go witht the newer fx chips. I found that tigerdirect has been having better deals than newegg. When doing my research on the AMD chips fx-6100 is one of the better buys, but I wanted 8-cores.

He was and I was too wanting 8x core, but the 300 watt power usage and performace wasn't what I was looking for. So I started looking at other chips. The X6 Phenom is still smoking the X8 bulldozer and Piledriver in every review I have found. I looked at the FX 4100 but it seems it isn't a true X4 core, it is using virtual cores. He is using a Phenom 2.3 X3 core right now with 6gb ram. He really doesn't need a upgrade, but he has been saving up his good grade upgrades because he wanted a big upgrade at Christmas time.

The case is one of the older Alienware Area 51 R4,5,6. He likes mine, huge case with plenty of room. It still has the lights and fan in it. So I think this would give him a case he can use for a very long time.

I see the prices on the Alienware cases have gone way up. One I was looking at was close to 300 for empty case. I only paid about 180 for mine and the only thing was missing was harddrive and graphics cards.

I have an extra case I never used I can ship it your way (free) I'm cleaning out all my old stuff it's either going in the trash or going in the trash. I have one rage I'm having a hard letting go, soon.

I may wind up just getting him a lind case off ebay. At least I know it will last.

I find oem cases to be better quality then the bargain cases these days. I will often recycle a case for a customers build as long as it is in close to new condition. I remember when $24 would get you a nice sturdy codegen full tower case and 300w psu. Granted it wasn't the most stylish looking thing but it got the job done. Used one for years in my own personal pentium 3 build. These days I wouldn't trust a case in that price range. They are all made from extremely flimsy metal which can easily flex thus shorting against the mobo.

Not to long ago I did a core 2 office pc build in a pentium 4 gateway case that had more then adequate cooling. For what it was it turned out really nice. micro atx ECS board, 4gb of ram core 2 2.66 a coolermaster tower cooler and power supply. Hitachi hdd and a LG super multi sata writer.

Only thing about going the recycled case method is depending on the manner of acquisition often critical parts are missing. In the gateway case it was the hdd cage. I was able to source a replacement rather easily off ebay though. So for $7 I got a super sturdy case to do the build in.

If anyone else was thinking of upgrading a IDOL now is the time. 30 bucks shipped for lower half and riser card needed of a 945 aopen. This will give you a 945 chipset and dual cores.


( I got one in 965 chipset also at home, waiting on the i5/i7 version boards to come down in price to upgrade a black Idol I have, want it to be a beast, lol.)
