This has nothing to do with money. My sense of right and wrong has been offended. On the other hand, while I am willing to lose money on the deal, I do not want to lose that much money -- hence no lawyer.

He does have a point, especially with the higher levels of Governments like state and federal - they have unlimited resources to draw upon and waste err use against you.

This would be a city with a population of about 1500, and the reason that they are trying to bilk people for unused services is that they are having budget problems right now.

So long as you have your wits about you and are willing to invest the time, handling your own claim shouldn't be too costly. In Igloo land, you are only looking at $250 to file. Then you have all the legwork and the time that goes into preparing a solid case.

Since you are doing this based on principle, you likely don't mind the effort. Best of luck. So long as you don't let it get to you, you might even have a bit of fun with the whole thing.

Would be fun to read some Zane comments right now . . .

It costs $94 to file in small claims court and $25 for the mediation session prior to the court date.

It gets far more interesting, but I am too tired to go into it at length. Suffice it to say that the board forgave a year old debt that the board member with the criminal conviction "forgot" to pay -- in their words, he made an "honest" mistake. I went to the board meeting last night to complain about that, since we are not being given any leeway for an honest mistake that we made, and it got a bit interesting. They still will not back down. Plus, I found more criminal records for that board member in another state that include felonies. "Honest" indeed.

Apparently having integrity isn't a requirement to hold a seat on the board.

Not here. Interestingly, the dairy to which we sold our old house has had rumored mafia connections. All that matters is that their cheque did not bounce!

what's the mob dairy going to do with your old house?

i remember doing work for a small dairy cheese maker in a smaller city near Toronto, Hamilton, but with a bigger and stronger Mafia connection, well he told me that right next door was a Bigger known mafia dairy cheese maker - the name shall remain anonymous - that wanted his smaller cheese business too. He refused and so they planted a bomb at his retail outlet at the factory late at night. No one hurt as it was empty. Bus this fellow, went to the local police and somehow had a sit down with the mob and came to some agreement and he kept his business - what it was i don't know, but his father who started the business was an upstanding member of the community well liked and gave lots of money to the local hospital - so much so that they have a statue of him there !

All i know is that the smaller cheese place would promptly pay their bills on time but i also did work for the bigger mafia cheese place and boy those guys would drag payment 60 - 90 -180 days - and who am i to argue for payment with the mob? needless to say i don't do business with them anymore and the smaller cheese guy dies of a heart attack at 60 - gee i wonder if it could be from stress of having the mob next door - but his wife and kids run it now.

ps his cheese was 10X better than the Mob's )) he even won awards

They have bought almost all of the houses around them and are currently renting them out. In our case, our property consisted of two lots, one of which was a large field adjacent to their building. If they ever want to do any expansion, they would have to go that way. Part of me wanted to hold on to it until they really needed it, but they gave us a very fair price as it was, and we got a great price on the house that we bought, so it all worked out. Everything except the part about the village board, that is!

it's true they tend to like the dairy stuff

Another old customer i did work for was a Sicilian and his ummm 'partners' who had a milk processing plant. They were actually good customers to me but i didn't get to close.

He sold out to a LARGE national dairy chain and he retired to the Dominican Republic to pursue "other" adventures down there. I think he has some kind of hotel casino.

He made sure his son had a lifetime job as the plants electrician and flies his family down to the island on a regular basis.

Must be nice.

I also remember the plant manager - a big Irish guy and a shady character to boot who tried to get me to marry his daughter, nice big boobies btw, - inviting me go see illegal fist fights with them, maybe the mob gets recruits like this or bets ? or their way of having fun- ala fight club stlye - but i didn't wanna see it or be a participant - maybe i should have gone.
