Flights to Scotland sometimes route through Amsterdam. Terms like, excuse me, are pretty common on cramped flights. Of course, the first time I heard a Dutch person speak those words, I thought he was saying, "eeb-i-deep." You can imagine my surprise when I saw the term written out!

The reverse works wonders. I bumped into someone on our first subway ride when we got to Japan, and it obviously impressed the person when a honkey told him, "gomennasai."
