Well, Judi Dench is just awesome.

That was one of my favorite comments made about how it sort of defies the new continuity to retain her as M in the reboot: "How do you say no to Judi Dench?" I cannot remember who said that -- Campbell, maybe?

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
I think retaining her as M was a great decision. And it completely works because the reboot is supposed to be Bond starting out. It doesn't matter if we've seen Dench as M before because, as far as timelines go, those other Bond stories are theoretically in the future.

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
Well, there is the age question, but I am hardly going to worry about that!
I rewatched Quantum of Solace yesterday. I think that I may be guilty sometimes of treating it like it is a bad film just because it is a disappointing film, but that is a false equivalency. It is certainly better than most of Brosnan's and Moore's films, despite the flaws. I rather like most of the Haiti sequence, at least up until the completely incoherent boat chase. It starts with a bang with the brutal fight at the hotel (with the really interesting moment at the end when Bond calmly severs his opponent's femoral artery) and actually lets Bond act like a spy for a while, not just an action star. All of my criticisms of the film still stand, but I need to admit that the film is a good one regardless.

Details. In the future, M has plastic surgery!
I have to rewatch Quantum. Traditionally, I have always watched Bond on January 1, so I will need to line up a few films. Since the Blu-ray releases were put on hold, that cuts my library to about half, so the decision should be an easier one this year.

Have a Craigathon and let me know what you think.
Wilson and Broccoli are certainly on board with Craig:

I like Craig, but I'm not sure I'd want to see him in five more films unless they up the production schedule. He's 43 now. I'm not sure he'll make a believable Bond come his mid-50s.

Well, we do not spend as much time surfing the red districts of the interwebs like you do, so we have to find something else to amuse ourselves!

Did Roger Moore ever make a believable Bond? Craig has done a good job so far. I'd hate to see that sullied just to beat Moore's record.
Iago and Seamaster rehash Bond. mrblur checks out bondage.

{N-TYSH}
I would be able to accept Craig into his early fifties. It would provide some interesting continuity if they were willing to age the character with him. They could always reboot again -- Martin Campbell will hopefully still be alive!

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
If they do that, they need to find some Bond girls around his same age. It looks silly when they pair a 50-year old with a 20-year old, even though I'm sure that's happening all the time on mrblur's sites.

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
Who said that it has to be a 20 year old? Maude Adams was still gangbusters in Octopussy, and I think that she was in her late thirties or early forties at that point. And I was perfectly fine with Kim Basinger together with Sean Connery in Never Say Never Again. Just try to erase the nasty mental image of Roger Moore and Tanya Roberts (or worse yet, Lynn Holly-Johnson) and you will be fine.

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
My point was around the huge age gap, which becomes obvious and looks silly when the lead actor is visibly past his prime. But, yes, Roger Moore was definitely the worst offender, partly because he just wasn't that manly to begin with, so it was even more difficult to conceive why some young(ish) hotty would cuddle up to him.

See, now you just started those Lynn Holly-Johnson mental images again. Ew.

The problem with Lynn Holly-Johnson is that she was so young looking when she did For Your Eyes Only. She looked too innocent.

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
I kind of like the Wilson introduction. I have said it before, but I really admire how Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have shepherded the series over the last three post-Cubby decades. They have made their share of mistakes, but they have openly acknowledged those mistakes and have been willing to experiment without moving things too far away from the formula. And making Casino Royale took some serious balls after the admittedly terrible Die Another Day was the highest-grossing film in the series (in actual dollars, of course.) I doubt that the studio was as eager to reboot things as they were. And they stood by Daniel Craig despite all the flack that he received.

Re: Seamaster and Iago's endless rehashing Bond thread
The intro was brief but to the point. I actually would have preferred a bit more, but there is plenty of time for more content.
Craig is well accepted now, so it is easy to stand by the decision to make him the next Bond. But you're right, it certainly wasn't that way from the beginning. I was quite wary of Craig and wondered why the heck Clive Owen or Ewan McGregor weren't chosen for the role.
