I haven't heard Quatermass talked about in years. Have you seen the miniseries on which the movies were based?

I have seen the various TV version and the movie versions as well. At least in the case of Quatermass and the Pit, I much prefer the movie version. Like I said, I consider it to be the best Hammer film, period. I would also peg it as Roy Ward Baker's best film, and he was no slouch. The whole noction of racial memories (or genetic memories, if you prefer) is something that I have always found fascinating, so I am predisposed to enjoy the story, let alone its stellar execution.

The Quatermassmovie is easier to digest as a whole, but I thought the miniseries was a competent offer.

Oh no, the series was quite good. I just think that the execution of the film is nearly flawless.
I did watch part two of The Dark Knight Returns, and while I think that the first part was better, the reality is that the first half of the graphic novel is probably better than the second half as well. In other words, I really cannot fault the creative team of the animated version for failing to achieve the same heights as the first part.
