Fiscal cliff, be damned, I'm going to build a trading computer to do some mildly aggressive swing trading from. I intend to build a desk to work from too, btw. Yes, I'll take pictures.

My question for the day: If I only intend to drive 4 27" monitors, I could probably just run 2 simpler video cards to net my 4 DVI signals, right? No need to buy a Quadro card or a "eyefinity" type card which will probably be display port which I will have to adapt/ convert to DVI anyway?

You're going to play with futures, forwards and swaps? Sounds like good times.

For the video cards: You just need four heads, so two dual-head video cards should do the trick.

You would be correct, 2 cheap video cards that have 2 dvi ports a piece would do just fine. My 550 and old 460 both have 2 dvi and 1 hdmi. You could probably get 3 panels on here. 2 dvi and one via mini hdmi to hdmi through an hdmi to dvi adapter cable.

So far it looks like it will be an i7 920 riding on a x58 EVGA mobo, with 16GB of ram that will be recycled into this build. I also have a EVGA GT520 handy, so as suggested, I'll pick up a 2nd one to help drive a mix of (4 total) HP 2709 & 2711 monitors.

BTW; I'm also building a 2'nd rig spec'd similar to the above only with 8gb of ram and only one GPU, this one will run in a window on an HD TV or on one of the monitors above if available.

So effectively I can have 3 (or 4) monitors running charts, have Bloomberg on the TV (via cable) with a window available (or the 4th monitor) to google search, ...or as mrblur would suggest; watch porn.

Very Happy

if you haven;t bought the monitors yet, look into these.

Thinking of purchasing two and getting the vesa mounts from monoprice. According to the little research I have done they are the same panel as the apple monitors, but they are A- grade versus A+ for apple.

mrblur might be on to something. Even if the market is taking a hit, you can a least find a rise on one of the monitors.

Your used parts look a whole lot better than mine, lol. I just pulled the two 7900gt/ko's from the hexx and put a used GTS 250 I had from an older project in there. Some time in January it's looking like it may get it's second 23" monitor and upgrade the motherboard to the one from my sons current rig. For Christmas he is getting a AMD 990 motherboard, 16gb ram and AMD x6 core. I will be taking the x3 core and 6gb ram from his current system to upgrade the hexx.

One should always be careful when mrblur asks for photos in a thread that is talking about rises.

Yes, in this case the review alone will probably suffice, minus any downloaded freshly-taken photos.

Usually I associate the word, fresh, with something that is good. In this context, it gives me the shivers.

Boring stuff: related to the desk, casters and laminate (samples).

Right now I'm playing with Google Sketchup, to give my fabrication guys something to follow, ...it seems that after several years of me waving my arms around and going "you know" they have become a bit gun shy when they see me pull up.

Regarding purchases, need 2 more HP2711x monitors and a "bigger" HDTV. Oh and mice, I'm looking for wireless 4 or 5 button mice. I'd like something "fresh" from HP, I asked a couple people in the PC Group, but heard nothing back, ...I don't think there is anything in there line-up currently, odd huh? Or am I missing a simple way to go backwards on a web page?
