Re: My latest voodoo projects
Well today when working on my the cable management in my first generation omen/rage f5 case I noticed some previously unnoticed damage. It reminded me of this pic of a review omen;
My card reader plug was melted (Well at least now I know why this system was originally parted out) luckily that was the extent of the damage. (to the case anyway ) I have not tested it yet but I would venture to say the card reader probably still works because the melted plastic was minimal. I hit my box filled with wiring from gutted pcs in search of an old front side usb connector, I quickly noticed that those old analog cd audio cables have the same connector, A short while later I had the plug switched over and as good as new.
Left: usb card reader cable Right: cd rom drive analog audio cable circa 1999 (I finally found a practical use for these damn things)
I am so pleased with the way it turned out I am thinking of converting the other 2 single pin style usb connectors over as well.
normally I wouldn't bother mentioning it but If it ever happens to you guys now you will know how to source a replacement plug and properly repair it. I am saying this because the previous owners fix was a piece of electrical tape.
Yeah I think I'll be going with air cooling...

Re: My latest voodoo projects
Interesting that the cable swap worked. I wonder what the extra wire is for on the USB connector (I'm seeing four versus three on the CD-ROM cable).

Re: My latest voodoo projects
The cd audio cable consists of a left signal, right signal and gnd. usb headers have vcc+ (power) D+ D- (signal) and gnd.
Other then that they are the same (molex?) connector. If I had to replace the contacts they are the same as well.

Bump
Finally found a 1kw psu that fits; and its a coolermaster.
Installed 2 brand new lian li 120mm case fans the other day, as you can see no radiator. Air cooling it is. The lian li hardware kit is blocking the fans but you can see how nice the stealth grills look
And here is the board i picked out:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6730649&CatId=4070
(yes the fact the board is red and black sealed the deal)
Hoping to order the board later this week.

Bump
She lives
I Still have a lot of cable management to do to bring it up to voodoo specs. (I am going to have to buy or make some extensions as the psu leads simply are not long enough to route the wires the way I want to)
Spec wise its what a voodoo should be though:
Evga x58 FTW3
Core i7 960
24GB Patriot Sector 7 Ram
Zalman CNPS9900 MAX Red
LG Bluray writer
40GB Intel SSD (Boot Drive)
2x2TB Hitachi 7200RPM Drives (About 3 months old, Was in a raid 1 array in my old system (The lian li full tower), Will have to back it up and move the drives over)
Disregard the video card in the photo, Its just a spare 9800GT I am using for now
I have to say I was a bit worried about my hdd configuration however I had an idea. I am going to be running an intel 40gb ssd. I am going to dig up some 3.5" to 5.25" brackets and install it in the internal 5.25" bay where the liquid cooling reservoir use to be. That will leave my 4 lower bays open for storage drives.
I have to admit I was worried it would not look like a voodoo with out the liquid cooling but as you can see I don't think that there will be any doubt this is a voodoo omen.
Let me know what you guys think.

What do I think? You are welcome to come over any time and rebuild the internals of my RAGE -- that is what I think!

I had an Omen (with the inverted MB) on air, looked cool, ...it's liquid cooled now though (for no good reason).

Do you happen to have a photo of what it looks like now? I am interested to see what you've done with it.
I was considering running water but in the end I decided to go with a good air setup. If I ever decided to try wc it would have to be something non conductive like mineral oil
I am surprised how quiet this setup actually is. There is no comparison to the noisy air cooled alienware desktop I saw earlier today.
I will have more pictures soon.
Got my 285gtx in today and I gamed with it for the first time since I built it. This setup is incredible. My ping to my favorite server even decreased by 20ms as well. However that could also be do to the fact I am not running steam off of a raid 1 array anymore (I have yet to clean both drives off and rebuild it)
Re: My latest voodoo projects
You've got quiet cooling in there (with the Zalmans and 120-mm fans), so I'm not surprised that it's not that noisy. Water cooling has a neat factor, but isn't really needed unless you are into agressive overclocking.
By the way, EastT: You get bonus points for getting PO to post again!

We've been trying to close escrow on a house, it's been a nightmare (believe it or not the bank says, we're over qualified). Not really complaining, just that it's been taking up a lot of time.
