To be perfectly honest, it could be either or . . . .

Re: My latest voodoo projects
The odd part is if I under clock the gpu using atitool it stays stable and keeps artifacts to a minimum.
It isn't 100% but when under clocked with ati tool it is livable for now.

Re: My latest voodoo projects
Depends. Underclocking will affect both core and RAM speed.

Re: My latest voodoo projects
I went to home depot yesterday to get that heatgun but apparently they only carry the expensive ones in the store so I am going to have to order it online.
While I was there I asked them if they carried infrared thermometers and they looked at me like I was crazy. After explaining what it does I was informed that they do not carry any such product yet it is right on there website.

Talk about worthless incompetent people.
All of the ram chips look intact and well soldered
I am almost tempted to reflow it in the sager plastics using the gpu heat spreader (that plate that goes under the keyboard) and its screws to clamp the chip to the board during the process.
If I ever get this laptop 100% working I am going to take the sager plastics and a bunch of case fans and make a custom notebook cooling pad

Re: My latest voodoo projects
You are looking for spreaders, thermometers and screws? I will definitely not turn my back on you when you are working on a project.

Re: My latest voodoo projects
Which model is that? I have a Fluke one, ...and I kind of remember Fluke bought Raytek. I've never seen a handle like that though?
Re: My latest voodoo projects
It is an old model, mfg 1995. Raytek pm plus 20, which is the most basic out of the 3 models in its family.
Re: My latest voodoo projects
Have you calibrated, maybe that's not the right word, ...have you checked it against another instrument or source for accuracy?
Re: My latest voodoo projects
Well i dont know how accurate my test was but here is what I did.
I have an analog contact thermometer. I held it in my hand for about a minute and it read ~90 degrees. I used the raytek on my hand it it also read 90 degrees. If you know of a better way to check its accuracy id like to know.

Try shooting it at boiling water, if it's within the range of the tool.

And I would caution against sticking your hand in the boiling water.

Tears of Envy?
Found my self another parts machine with a guaranteed working motherboard. I built the machine and now have just going on 4 hours on it with out any issues.
The most interesting part is the working replacement motherboard is revision 2.8as (I have never seen a duel letter desingation on a clevo mobo either, then again i mostly play around with D900 series laptops
The motherboard it replaced (the one with the artifacting graphics) is revision 2.8a, I compared them side by side before installing and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what clevo changed. Everything is identical.
I was lucky enough to get a parts machine that was apparently never gamed on. I don't plan on doing any gaming on it either (I don't want to cook it, as these are notorious for) That is what my alienware d900t 6.2s w/ 7800 is for
When the weather gets warmer I still plan to reflow the graphics chip on the 2.8a, I want to see how it will turn out too , If it ends up working I am going to hold onto it as a spare.

Tears of gagging, by the looks of it.
Glad you found a compatible board, but I'm interested to see how your reflowing project works out. Keep us posted.

Re: My latest voodoo projects
Got around to checking the 7200 rpm hitachi's health today and its not looking good, I guess being resurrected was more then it could handle. On the upside I found a vaio parts machine that had 2gb of ddr400 and an 80gb toshiba drive that is still in good health. Tomorrow morning I will be installing the toshiba and loading windows. That is the only problem I have encountered since I built it the other day. Running as good or better then the day voodoo built it.

(Damn 3.4 turned out not to be an EE)
I also made this out of the pile of misc parts;
But it still artifacts since I haven't gotten the heat gun yet, I am not rushing either because the temperature outside dosn't lend it self to doing projects very well this time of year. I was also playing around with the laptop using atitool. The artifacting stops if you underclock the video ram, So I am thinking that the problem may be bad vram not a bad gpu. Might see what I did with the completely dead v2.1 board out of the voodoo and see about swapping the vram from it to the partially working board.
Fear not though, I have a mitac 8355 mobo that died by falling off of a table, So at the minimum I will be heat gunning that when the weather gets warmer. I have been actually thinking about recording it

Re: My latest voodoo projects
Definitely video record it!
Sounds like you are making progress, though. Thanks for the update.

He has successfully passed the 500 word barrier and provided multiple pictures, so video would indeed be the only way to improve!

Photos of carnage would offer an incremental improvement, though we would feel bad for the melted boards.
