Re: Something retro
Nope no second box. I asked him where it is but he has yet to reply. If he continues to ignore me I will have no choice but to file a paypal claim. Which I don't really want to do considering something unforeseen may have come up, so I am giving him a while longer.
Part of that could be do to there being no mail on Sunday and the holiday today.

In Canada, we only just returned to regular mail service a week last Tuesday. The post folks were on strike.

Well, we are attempting to supress and destroy all public sector unions in this country, so we are not likely to have that problem.

Re: Something retro
I think that the missing turbo cd is resolved. The seller just told me that he resent it and I should see it this Saturday. The post office messed things up but at least it didn't get lost.
Oh and the working designs collection goes well

Re: Something retro
The rest of the missing stuff arrived yesterday with the exception of the rf adapter (Not like I was going to use it anyway)
The turbo cd is in good physical condition and works well however like all other turbo cd's seems to be starting to suffer from the middle gear degrading. Ill worry about that at a later date as other then being a bit noisy from slipping it is not affecting the drives ability to read games yet. (Although its probably making load times longer then they need to be)
I did however notice a lack of responsiveness from the turbo pad when playing sidearm. I opened it up and cleaned all of the contacts and pads (the turbo contacts were tarnished quite badly) Now it works great.

Re: Something retro
ok its "sidearms", Fair enough.
Don't mind the alienware, I was using it to burn some games because I only have a handful of originals atm.
That power cord runs off screen to my expensive surge protector, None the less I still keep it unplugged when not in use. I do that will all of my vintage electronics ever since "the belkin incident" In there defense though they did honor there connected equipment guarantee.
I really like the way that nec/hudson soft integrated video into the games. The ones I have played so far have a nice feel to them. I still can not belive that my turbo cd module is dated dec 1989, It feels like this console was made much later, Some of the cut scenes make me feel like im playing a ps1 game on an NES if that makes any sense.
Oh and to top everything off today my Japanese ssc 3.0 arived from japan and somebody in PA listed there region converter on ebay, So I may be able to get out of doing the region mod, Not because i am afraid i would mess it up. Its just given the opportunity id rather keep my console original.

Re: Something retro
Actually, I am disappointed. I was picturing you using a controller sidearm.

No, but there are other issues if we're talking about being mental.

Re: Something retro
Well I got my import converter today. I cleaned it up but it still did not want to work and I was starting to think I had a problem so I opened it up and checked continuity on all the contacts and everything seems ok so I cleaned all of the contacts again and its working great. I still cant play beyond shadowgate though as for some reason that is the one game my drive does not want to read. The odd part is it plays fine in magicengine. That is what really pissed me off. It works fine in the emulator but it wont play on the actual hardware, go figure.
Re: Something retro
Is the disc scratched? The drive in your original hardware may not be very robust.

Re: Something retro
Nope its freshly burned. I think the problem maybe I am trying to play a cd-r. Its odd though because most of my other games play fine. There is only one other game that I noticed exhibiting the same behavior. At first I thought I was having the infamous gear issue but I opened it up and that is not the case. I think that my laser may be weak and on the verge of dying completely. The good news is that the laser is nothing of nothing to replace with a modern unit. The gear is the impossible part to find a replacement for. To my knowledge the gear has never binded up once since I have had it. Others report the gear discoloring and getting brittle. My gear is the same color as all of the other ones that are in there so I guess that's a good sign. The console plays most games well. The only indication that there is something wrong is its nosier then any other cd based console I have ever owned. I think I am going to register for and then ask for some input on the pce engine forums when I get some time to actually fix it.
Re: Something retro
CD players from that era were very finicky about playing CD-Rs (and early DVD players were even worse.) i doubt that the drives that they used in those consoles were exactly top-of-the line. It may play some CD-Rs but not all.

Re: Something retro
I forgot to mention that most of the other games I have right now are copies and they play fine.
Interestingly enough I tried it with my cd system card v2.0 today (It requires my recently acquired 3.0) With that card the system said that it required the ss3.0 card. I then was playing dragon slayer which apparently took up all of my gamesave memory because when I tried beyond shadowgate again instead of the usual black screen with the laser seeking noise I got a screen stating that the game did not have enough room to create save data press the run button to continue but as soon as I did it started doing the usual black screen with the laser tracking back and forth.
The odd part is that my burned copies of of Exile 2: Wicked Phenomenon and Dragon Slayer 1 play fine.
All of the discs my games are burned on are from the same pack/batch of cd-rs so I don't think that its a media problem.
I am putting my money on a weak laser as the burned games play fine on the omen with magic engine.
Interestingly enough I hear the same tracking noises if I try to play it came from the desert, And I have an original store bought copy of that.
At this point I have a few options.
I can just live with the drive that doesn't play some games and hope it holds out
Buy a pc engine duo from somebody in japan (Since for some reason nobody bought them in the us, I can still make use of my region converter but to play American games instead)
Buy a broken cd module and fix it up (They are abundant, And I would still have the mostly working one)
Build a custom 5.25" peripheral for the rage that accepts a multitude of controllers and just play with that.
